“We showed the right reaction”

A comeback, a dream debut and a home win – the three points which summarise our hard-earned home win against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Friday evening. The win was just that – hard-earned – but the team got through it together, and the players and staff alike were relieved to earn their latest three Bundesliga points. “We gave it everything, pressed, and dug in, and to use a cliché, those are things you need as a team if you want to win in the Bundesliga. Our reaction to going a goal down was important – we needed to have the right reaction and we did,” said Davie Selke, making his return to the pitch after a broken rib. herthabsc.com has summarised all the reactions from the Olympiastadion.

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp: I’m really happy about the win and my goal! It’s never as fun to watch from the bench so I was even happier just to get on the pitch and help the team. The fact I scored straight away was even better of course. It’s a shame that the second goal was given as an own goal, but the most important thing is that the ball went in (laughs). I want to help the squad with as many goals and assist as possible – this was a pretty good start!

Davie Selke: Even though I only broke my rib two and a half weeks ago I was well up for the game. I have to thank the medical team at the club that I was able to get on the pitch today without any issues. We took a good look at what we didn’t do well in the first half. Our reaction to going a goal down was important – we needed to have the right reaction and we did. We also did well to stay on the front foot after taking the lead. We gave it everything, pressed, and dug in, and to use a cliché, those are things you need as a team if you want to win in the Bundesliga. The fans saw what happens when players give their all for the club on the pitch tonight. There were more than 20,000 fans there but it sounded like the stadium was full – well done to all the Herthaners in tonight!

Alexander Schwolow: It’s a big relief. We created the better opportunities in the game, but didn’t set anywhere near enough up before the break. Fürth were only really dangerous through their throw-ins, and it was almost typical that we would concede a penalty like we did. That said, I have to compliment the team, as they reacted very well psychologically, especially given how the season’s gone so far. We turned the game on its head through our energy and sheer force of will. The last half an hour wasn’t just fun for the fans in the stands but will also give us belief for the tasks coming up!
