“It’s a sobering experience”

A 15th defeat of the season sees Hertha lie 17th in the Bundesliga table. Despite an improvement in the second half, the frustration from all was clear to see, but commitment alone was not enough as the Blue-Whites went down 2-0 away to Borussia Mönchengladbach. “Endless clichés and making big promises on the microphone do nothing for anyone. The fact is, being 17th is rubbish,” said Davie Selke, going on to make the targets for the rest of the season clear: “We need some crumb of success and we have to fight with everything we have to get out of this situation. It will be difficult, but it’s not impossible!” All the reaction from Mönchengladbach is here on herthabsc.com.

Davie Selke: The reasons we lost are crystal clear. When you concede two easily preventable goals from set pieces in a game like this, it’s a sobering experience. The first half belonged to Gladbach, but we did better after the break, right up until the second set piece. We tried to get back to basics and had a good plan, but endless clichés and making big promises on the microphone do nothing for anyone. The fact is, being 17th is rubbish. We need some crumb of success and we have to fight with everything we have to get out of this situation. It will be difficult, but it’s not impossible!

Jurgen Ekkelenkamp: Our performance was just not good enough, even if we did show a different side to ourselves than we did against Frankfurt. Still, it’s five losses in a row, and that’s disappointing. We were too passive in the first half even if we didn’t let a lot through. We created a lot more chances after half time, but it’s still the case that we’re conceding preventable goals. We really need a win – every bit of success we have will improve our self confidence and lead to better performances.

Fredi Bobic: We saw the lads give their all and fight hard tonight. We didn’t get forward enough in the first half, but we also didn’t let much through – that was the strategy we went for. Then, we conceded a penalty which was just so unnecessary. We tried to be a bit more attacking after half time and the game was more open – we were definitely in it, we just didn’t get the goal. Then, we concede the second goal from another set piece. It was too easy for them, we need to be marking them man-to-man. We’re now in an automatic relegation place – we need to accept that and fight to get back out of it. I’m going to be talking internally with my colleagues and the coach. We’re not going to be making any rash decisions, but we’ll talk on Sunday.
